Nokia E5 Review

Nokia E5 review : One of the most recent Nokia smartphones is the Nokia E5. The Nokia E5 handset has a full Qwerty keyboard and is a follow-up of what Nokia offered with the Nokia E71 and E63 models. The Nokia E5 cell phone is especially aimed at the business user, who will also use the Nokia smartphone for personal use. That is actually a pretty logical and practically-oriented target group. A large part of business users also actively use their phone for personal use. The fact that the Nokia E5 is a business phone is noticeable right away in creating an e-mail account. The possibility of creating several (up to ten) accounts is offered, and is carried out easily.

Nokia E5
Nokia E5 features
The new Nokia E5 mobile phone supports the HSDPA network, and also has Wi-Fi. That’s handy to be able to use the local wireless network or to quickly stay up to date on the go. Speed is still a necessary factor for mobile communication. The software applications are not getting any lighter, nor are the data that are being sent back and forth. If you ever get lost, you can let the Nokia E5 smartphone take you to the right address via Ovi Maps, Nokia’s free navigation solution.

Nokia E5 Smartphone
A business user is also involved in social networks such as LinkedIn. The Nokia E5 cell phone offers immediate access to the popular social media Apps, so that the most recent status of every personal or business contact can be shown. In terms of design, the Nokia E5 resembles the E71. The display is fairly small and measures 2.4-inches, but still has a good, clear display. The resolution is pretty standard with 320x240 pixels and a total of 250.000 color reproduction. Right under the display the buttons for the main parts such as Menu, Home and Contact are found. The Qwerty keyboard can be controlled easily, which is an immediate advantage for typing longer messages.

Nokia E5 review
The new Nokia E5 smartphone comes with a standard 2GB microSD memory card included, but it's possible to increase storage capacity via the card slot. The Nokia E5 phone also supports microSDHC, so that the maximum capacity becomes 32GB. The internal memory is only 250MB. With all the software applications, social network activities, business programs and multimedia files at hand, storage capacity becomes more important for such a Smartphone. The Nokia E5 mobile phone is expected to be available in the third quarter.

Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) on Monday unveiled two new BlackBerry smartphones and a voice over WiFi feature to its voice technology.

The BlackBerry Bold 9650

The new devices are the BlackBerry Pearl 3G and the BlackBerry Bold 9650.

The new BlackBerry Pearl 3G measures 4.25 by 1.96 by 0.52 inches and weighs 3.3 ounces. It has a 624 MHz processor with 256 MB of flash memory and a microSD/SDHD memory card slot that supports cards of up to 32 GB capacity.

Other Pearl 3G features are an optical trackpad and a keyboard; a media player for videos, pictures and music; and dedicated media keys. It also has a 3.2 megapixel (MP) camera with zoom, autofocus, video recording capability and flash.

The Pearl 3G has a built-in GPS, photo geotagging capabilities, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 support. It also has voice-activated dialing, a speakerphone and support for various headsets.

Further, the Pearl 3G has a removable, rechargeable battery that provides about 5.5 hours of talk time on 3G networks. It will be available in two models and will be available from different carriers in May.

Details of the Bold 9650

The BlackBerry Bold 9650 is a global smartphone that supports 3G EVDO networks in North America and HSPA/UMTS networks overseas. It measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.56 inches and weighs 4.8 oz. The device has a full QWERTY keyboard, an optical trackpad and built-in WiFi so users can talk on the phone while browsing the Web or dealing with email.

The Bold 9650 has 512 MB of flash memory and an expandable memory card slot that supports microSDHC cards of up to 32 GB. It comes with a 2GB microSDHC card.

The 9650 has a 3.2 MP camera with flash, variable zoom, image stabilization, autofocus and video recording capabilities. It has an advanced video player for videos, pictures and music; a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack; and support for the Bluetooth Stereo Audio Profile.

The 9650 offers access to Facebook; MySpace and Flicker; and supports various instant messaging services. It offers a full HTML Web browser and supports streaming audio and video. The device has a built-in GPS with support for geotagging. Other features include voice activated dialing, a speakerphone and support for Bluetooth 2.1.

The Bold 9650 has a removable, rechargeable battery that supports 5 hours of CDMA talk time. It will be available in May.

Voice Over WiFi

RIM also announced BlackBerry Mobile Voice System 5 with voice over WiFi calling on Monday. This works with Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) Unified Communications Manager. It lets enterprise users leverage their workdesk phone numbers and extensions on their BlackBerry smartphones.

Users will be able to make and receive business calls over a WiFi connection. Enterprise IT can set which WiFi networks employees can access. Network preference settings let IT prioritize the use of either WiFi or cellular for making phone calls.

The WiFi feature could be favorably received by businesses. "If you're an enterprise user and go from campus to campus and have WiFi connectivity between campuses, you'll save a lot of minutes," Ramon T. Llamas, a senior research analyst at IDC, told TechNewsWorld.

"I think it's a good response to RIM's vast enterprise base," he remarked. "Now you see enterprises moving towards unified communications and wanting to be connected at all times. By letting them do this while saving some money at the same time through using voice over WiFi, RIM's scored a major coup."

Voice over WiFi is already available on other smartphones, so is RIM late with this development? Not so, Maribel Lopez, principal analyst and founder of Lopez Research, told TechNewsWorld.

"Voice over WiFi needs to be engineered for good battery life," she pointed out. "The difference between RIM and other platforms is that RIM is always concerned with efficiency and battery life; most other platforms are not."

The BlackBerry Pearl 3G

Other Bold 9650 features that could be attractive to enterprise IT are authentication (which ensures that only authorized BlackBerry smartphones have access to the corporate phone system) and incoming call filtering.

BlackBerry Mobile Voice System 5 will be available later this year.

Market Blues

Despite the new releases, RIM shares began falling Monday after CoCEO Jim Balsillie announced the new products. Shares started the day at over US$70 but at one point fell to $68.51.

Investors were perhaps disappointed that Balsillie had not announced a new browser or user interface.

RIM has received a lot of knocks for having a "somewhat outdated operating system that can't compete with Android and the iPhone's operating system," IDC's Llamas said.

RIM's share price largely recovered later in the day when RIM's other coCEO, Mike Lazaridis, spoke up about BlackBerry OS 6. The sooner the company can implement its new software, the better, according to Lopez. "RIM will be challenged to maintain growth until it changes the browser and UI experience," she said. "However, they have said that this will happen this year."

Palm begin to fall out

A senior vice president at Palm has just left the company, and one of its biggest retail partners, Radio Shack, as of today will phase out all systemwide stock of Palm phones.

Michael Abbott, Palm's SVP of Software and Services, will officially leave his executive post on Friday, April 23 after the company confirmed his resignation last Friday.

And today, the Wall Street Journal confirmed that Radio Shack no longer plans to sell the Palm Pre or the Palm Pixi, the mobile company's two current models.

Radio Shack sold the phones with its biggest mobile partner, Sprint. However, sales of other Sprint handsets like the Blackberry Curve easily outsold the Pre and the Pixi.

The retailer will replace the Palm phones with a new Blackberry and another "message-centric device."

In a Barron's interview, Sprint spokesperson Scott Sloat. "This is in line with Radio Shack’s normal product planning process - there is a designated amount of space in stores for handsets and they work to keep the line up of devices as current as possible."

The two losses for Palm come as the company continues to be unsuccessful in its bid to find a buyer. The company, once regarded as a leader in mobile electronics, has sunk to a point where it is now relegated to the bottom of the totem pole.

Analyst Lawrence Harris told the Wall Street Journal that Palm's "fundamental outlook remains highly challenging."

New iPhone coming in June?

We got word that Apple has booked a conference center in San Francisco and this just paves the way for the introduction of the next iPhone. We also heard that AT&T is not letting customers take vacation for certain periods in June, which was how it operated during the releases of the previous iPhone handsets.

BFD, you say? I have a feeling Apple’s really going to knock it out of the park with this hardware upgrade because it has to. The Droid Incredible is, well, incredible and many other devices make the iPhone 3GS look like old stuff. I’m hoping for a bigger, better screen, beefed up WiFi, a 5-megapixel camera, front-facing camera, and a few more surprises.

What say you, dear IntoMobile readers? What do you absolutely need in the next iPhone upgrade?
